Everest

Tragically there are no exact figures for the amount of climbers who've lost their lives on the world's tallest mountain because so many are never found because of the treacherous roads and thousands of dollars it cost to return them to their family other bodies simply stay on mountainside and must be climbed over on route to the summit since Sir Edmund Hillary's team first reached the top in 1953 out of the more than 4,000 climbers to conquer Everest roughly six point five percent have died the deadly rock faces thin air and freezing temperatures were bad enough even before you factor in the effects of tourism the roughly eight hundred people who tried to climb the mountain every year make four fatal traffic jams are the more difficult parts of the ascent more people also increases the risk of avalanches which are thirty four percent of the leading cause of deaths on Everest

K2

K2 was first successfully ascended in 1954 just one year after Everest and the mountain is also second to Everest in height while there's a consensus among our panelists that the mountain on the Pakistan China border beats Everest for difficulty and for danger in fact the savage mountain is arguably the most difficult climb in the world it's the only mountain of a 14 tourists in the world to have never been ascended in winter owing to the minus 67 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures experienced on the peak during the season as a result there were only three hundred and six successful ascensions as of 2012 roughly five percent of the figure for Everest the mountain has also claimed almost 90 lives meaning there's more than one per every for success for the sense where in most cases the bodies are never recovered the most fatal occurrence was in 1986 when a snowstorm claimed the lives of 13 climbers

Fitzroy

On the Chile Argentina border mount Charlton or Fitzroy has a reputation as one of the most difficult mountains on earth to climb this is reflected in the fact that the mountain averages just one successful ascension a year compared to roughly 50 who conquer Everest not one of the highest mountains Fitzroy instead offers vertical granite cliffs and sheer drops it's also coated in ice and subjected to severe weather that can change drastically in five minutes this also makes for a beautiful view which unfortunately contributes to Fitzroy his reputation as a photographer killer but Fitzroy can prove a death trap for even the most experienced alpinists as was the case for American Chad Kellogg Kellogg was such a skilled Mountaineer that he held speed records for two mountains including the next entry on the list but sadly lost his life on the treacherous descent from Fitzroy peak in 2014

 

Denali

Mount McKinley or its original name Denali officially restored in 2015 is America's tallest mountain the world's highest mountains typically reside on the equator but Denalis northern latitude of 63 degrees gives it a significantly lower barometric pressure than other high mountains low barometric pressures subject climbers to migraines joint pain and low blood pressure which is already a huge physical issue faced by climbers the mountain is also home to extreme low temperatures which can drop to 75 below in winter wind chills could even cause a climbers body temperature to drop to minus 118 freezing them in seconds as a result only about half of climbers who attempt the climb succeed and the Alaskan mountain claimed over 120 lives between 1903 and 2006 this is one of the highest rates for a mountain outside of the world's tallest 14 a 44 of these bodies have never been recovered

 

Kanchenjunga

The world's third highest mountain Kanchenjunga is no less deadly than its taller peers sitting on the indo-Nepal border the mountain is renowned for its final stretch which involves over 1,000 feet of vertical rock face this kind of climb is hard enough without all the physical effects of being twenty-eight thousand feet above the ground not conquered until 1955 the mountain was first attempted in 1905 but an avalanche took the lives of all four climbers blizzards and avalanches like these are big killers on Koch and junior so despite advances in gear and technology the mountain is only getting more dangerous from the increasing effects of climate change this has seen couching juniors fatality rate rise to 20% taking more than 50 lives since 1905 this danger has only been added to by the fact that the mountains base has been adopted as military ground for operations by guerrilla troops and Nepali authorities
