Mount Washington is perhaps America's most deadly mountain despite it being the smallest on this list or perhaps because of that people commonly underestimate the mountain making it a popular climb for tourists despite the fact it's claimed over 150 live since records began in 18-49 in large part this is due to the fact that the mountain is considered to be the home of the world's worst weather through major storm tracks converge above the mountain and the average temperature throughout the year is 4 degrees below freezing sometimes this can drop as low as minus 35 degrees with wind bringing that as far as minus 100 speaking of wind the mountain average is 35 point 3 miles per hour which rises to hurricane forces of 75 miles per hour winds 110 days of each year in fact until 2010 man Washington held the world record for wind speed at 231 miles per hour or enough to demolish a brick wall
Nanga Parbat
before the world's ninth highest mountain was even successfully climbed for the first time in 1953 nanga parbat had already earned the nickname killer Mountain this is down to the 31 lives lost attempting to be the first to reach the summit succumbing to pulmonary edema frostbite hypothermia altitude sickness avalanches and snow storms by 2012 this number had climbed to 68 giving nanga parbat a ratio of 21 deaths to each 100 successful ascent this is the third highest ratio of all the top 14 tallest mountains and these were all just from the mountains natural risks but the mountain has also been home to one unnatural tragedy at the hands of the Afghanistani based fundamentalist group the Taliban in 2013 they crossed the border to the Pakistani mountain to rob and shoot a total of 11 climbers at their base camp cementing nanga parbat status as the killer mountain
Hua
quark roughly 120 kilometres east of the Chinese city of xi'an the peak of Mount hua is home to some of the world's most beautiful sights so you may be wondering why the mountain isn't more of a tourist hotspot that's because these views come at the end of one of the world's most deadly hiking trails to reach one of the five peaks the thrill seekers that attempt the trek have to cross a treacherous path primarily consisting of unstable 12-inch wide planks these are often broken leaving climbers with only a metal chain to hold on to other areas only offer a series of steps carved into the wall the mountain holds significant importance in Taoism regular pilgrimages combined with word-of-mouth tourism to make it a heavily populated trail sadly this is matched by the death toll which is unsubstantiated but frequently cited as over 100 people a year
Matterhorn
between Switzerland and Italy the Matterhorn or Savino is one of the most picturesque mountains in the Alps so much that it inspired the Disney ride of the same name but it's also known as the most deadly in no small part because of that beauty and yes the Disney ride this fame makes the Matterhorn a tourist trap with about 3,000 climbing it's annually many of whom are severely unprepared climbers are frequently faced by avalanches and Rock Falls which are almost impossible to predict because they're so often caused by the team above the tourism has also brought about huge littering problems which contaminate the water supplies increasing the danger that's why the mountain has claimed roughly 600 lives since the first successful ascent in 1865 in the 90s this death toll averaged 24 a year and has only now dropped to 12 after campaigns for more guides and increased safety
Annapurna
despite only ranking is the tenth highest mountain many credit the Nepalese Annapurna massive with a less sought-after record world's deadliest mountain this danger starts before the expedition even begins on the destroyed access roads that lead to it this means climbers even risk plunging off the mountain on the drive up the claim of deadliest mountain has been disputed because of the lack of statistics simply because of how few people even attempt the climb was first climbed in 1950 by two climbers who each lost their fingers to frostbite and gangrene and it's only been climbed to 191 people as of 2012 despite this small number the mountain has still claimed 61 lives a ratio of 34 deaths per 100 successful attempts the ratio is the highest of the world's 14 tallest mountains and was calculated before 2014 when a series of avalanches on and around Annapurna claimed over 40 lives that was 10 most dangerous mountains would you attempt the climb .
